YOUNG OFF-ROAD BIKERS READY FOR ALGOA JUNIOR NATIONAL THIS WEEKEND

Young off-road motorcycle and quad competitors will tackle the Algoa Junior National off-road race, the second round of the 2010 World of Accessories (WOA) Junior National Off-road Championship that will take place this weekend (13 March) in the Addo area outside Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

This event is the first of its kind for the organisers, the Algoa Off-road Club (AORC) and just over 210 entrants from all the corners of South Africa are looking forward to race in the Eastern Cape.

The battle will again be on in all the classes and the frontrunners will aim for the top spot on the podium as well as maximum points towards their championship onslaught. In the Open Bike Class Criterion Yamaha’s Scott Bouverie has thrown down the gauntlet by winning the first event, but he can expect competition from Timothy Young (Yamaha Support Team) who could not finish the first junior event, but won the Silver Challenge at the recent Ermelo Toyota 400.

They will be up again riders like team-mates Tyron Miller and Gerald Campher (Miller Moore Honda) as well as Free State racer, Meiring Vermeulen (Salley’s Yamaha) who all finished in the top five at the season opener.

The starting grid will also be packed in the Senior Bike Class for racers between the ages of 12 and 15 years where the KZN racer, Wade Young (Criterion Yamaha) would like to make it two in a row after winning the opening round earlier this season. Only two competitors (Shimwells Yamaha’s Angus Coetzee was his closest rival) in this class managed to complete a lap more than the rest in the allowed three hours. Alastair Drennan (The Roost KTM) as well as Yamaha riders, Ruan Nortjé and Tristan Menchy, would like to keep up while the rest would aim to add more points to their tally.

The Open Quad Class attracted the most entries (43) and the riders that will be chased are the defending champion, Giacomo Antiga together with his Can-Am Racing team-mate, Michael von Zweel. Behind them the big Factory Racing contingent – Quad MX KTM racers Dustin Ledwick, who could not finish the first event, and Dino do Amaral; Michael Wagner, who was third earlier this year and Mathew Barnard also on KTM’s as well as Julian Greef-Hoffman and Rorke Millar (Yamaha) will be chasing hard while the rest would like to finish and score points.

JJ Steyn (FD Racing Yamaha) finished second in the 2009 Junior Open Class and would like to better his ninth place after the first event while Gerhard Steenkamp (CDV Racing Can-Am); Suzuki racers Paulus Franken and Travis Zeeman (Suzuki) as well as Nicky Lombard (Team Nako Suzuki) have also finished in the top ten earlier this year and would like to keep up this appearance.

The girls will be out in full force competing in both the Senior Quad Class and the Ladies Class – Juanri Meintjies (Nako Suzuki); Megan Dunning (Yamaha) and Elanie van den Berg (Suzuki) have scored points after the first race while Martinique Keeler (Keeler Racing Team Suzuki) and Elrica Herbst (Yamaha Support Team) will also mix make-up and dust to try and score their first points for the season.

The battle will again be on in the Junior Open and Junior Modified Classes – Cape racers Joshua Schenck and Joshua Louw (Yamaha); lady racer, Tara Falkenberg (Honda) and Tyrone Renwick (Yamaha) will take on the rest of the non-Cape riders in the Junior Open Class.

The Junior Modified Quad Class class leader, Melchior Huskisson (Yamaha) will battle it out with racers like Christopher Petersen (Jag Quad Racing Yamaha); Wynie Steyn (FD Racing Yamaha) and CDV Racing’s Morné Fourie (Arctic Cat) while Boesman Racing Yamaha riders, Brandon Darlow and Wilru Pienaar, would like to score their first points for the season.

The competition will be on in all the other classes – in the 85cc Bike Class the fight will again be on between Aeron Thompson (Keeler Racing Suzuki) and Calvin Wiltshire (Shimwells Yamaha) while riders like Alastair Denman (Roost KTM), Roan Notre and Tristan Menschy (Yamaha) as well as Matt van Galen (Yamaha), Ross Blackwell, Dylan McGovern (Criterion Yamaha) and Gerhard Grove (Yamaha), who were separated by only a handful of seconds at the first outing, will be back to score even more points.

Dean Lindsay (KTM) would like to win the 65cc Bike Class again while Marco de Souza (KTM) and Tiaan Shattock (Kawasaki) will be chasing.

The Algoa Off-road Junior National will start with documentation on Friday (12 March) at Lloyd’s Brickworks in the Addo area with the junior classes starting their two-hour race at 09h00 on Saturday (13 March). Motorcycle and quad competitors compete on separate loops and the senior classes will start their three-hour race at 12h00.
